Paver patios and driveways in Las Vegas

Pavers are the second largest opportunity in this market and the easiest surface to install badly.

A paver patio is a flexible pavement. It works because a compacted base spreads the load, a thin bedding layer lets each unit seat, and an edge restraint stops the whole field from creeping outward. Take away any one of those and it fails in a specific, predictable way.

No edge restraint and the perimeter spreads, the joints open and the pattern walks. Too thick a bedding layer and the pavers rut under a car. No compaction in lifts and you get the dip where everybody steps off the back door.

Why pavers rather than concrete

A slab in this valley cracks. Not if, when: the ground moves, the temperature swings forty degrees in a day, and concrete has one strategy for that, which is to crack somewhere it chooses. Pavers have a joint every few inches and move without breaking.

The other reason is repair. A stained or cracked paver is lifted and swapped in ten minutes. A stained or cracked slab is a saw and a skip.

Driveways are a different job

A patio carries people. A driveway carries a vehicle, repeatedly, in the same wheel path. That means a deeper base, a heavier paver, and a soldier course locked at the edge. Anyone quoting the same build for both is quoting a patio and calling it a driveway.

What this covers

Where Pavers Go

Paver work covers patios, driveways, walkways, pool decks and coping, entries, courtyards and fire-feature surrounds. Each application has its own specification. A driveway needs a thicker paver and a different, deeper base than a patio, and a pool deck has its own requirements for slip resistance and surface temperature.

Choosing a Paver

Travertine is a common choice around Las Vegas pools, and the reason is practical: it stays cooler underfoot than many darker materials and handles strong sun well. Concrete pavers, porcelain and natural stone each have their own trade-offs in surface temperature, slip resistance when wet, maintenance and how they age in strong sun.

What Goes Under the Pavers

The base decides how a paver field performs, and it is the part that disappears once the job is finished. Excavation depth depends on the application, the base material and compaction are chosen for the soil, and a bedding layer, edge restraint and jointing sand complete the system. On caliche, drainage is the main concern, because water that cannot soak down moves the pavers.

Pavers Around a Pool

A paver deck around a pool needs slip resistance when wet, a surface that does not burn bare feet, and a clean detail where the deck meets the coping. The deck should drain away from the pool rather than into it. If the pool is already built and needs updating, see pool remodeling.

Every part of the job, under one team

Patios and seating areas

Laid on a base built for the use, with the pattern set out so the cuts land where they are least visible.

Walkways and pathways

Routes planned for how people actually move, at a width that works when two people use it at once.

Driveways

Deeper base, heavier unit and a locked soldier course, because a wheel path is not a patio.

Pool decks and coping transitions

Where the deck meets the coping, which is the joint that shows every millimeter of a bad install.

Edge restraint and joints

Restraint at every free edge and jointing sand that resists washout, which is what keeps the field tight.

Common questions

What homeowners ask us first

Do pavers move over time?

Properly restrained, no. The failures people describe as settling are almost always missing edge restraint or a base compacted in one pass instead of lifts.

Are pavers hotter than concrete?

In direct sun they are broadly similar, and the color matters more than the material. Lighter units run cooler, which is worth more here than almost anywhere.
